After a year? A season? 5 years? Never?
Is it something you’ve earned and you get to keep forever? Or is it like paying association dues, and you have to renew every year or so?
And when do you get to call yourself a triathlete? Do you have to finish a race first, or are you a triathlete if you swim, bike, and run?
I’d like to think you’d have to race first, because swimming, biking, then running at once is a lot different then swimming, biking, and running during the same week.
But then I’d be a hypocrite. I think you can call yourself a runner if you run. You don’t have to race. Although I guess you wouldn’t call yourself a marathoner until you’d run in an official marathon. Or is it when ever you’ve run 26.2 consecutive miles?
With that logic, are you just a triathlete in training? Or a dormant triathlete, like me? This season was a loss due to a knee injury that failed to heal well enough and I’m certainly not doing one anytime soon. So does my title go into hibernation, or do I need to earn it all over again?
And where does cycling fit into the whole thing?
While we’re on the topic, when do PRs expire? Or do they? My half marathon PR is from when I was 16. Is that still my PR? Or is it one of my more recent half marathons- a PR with a caveat?
I’d have to say it’s the fastest time, no matter what. You can’t say it’s my PR but I ran faster once…a long time ago.
So what’s the deal? Triathlete, marathoner, cyclist, PR?
