It’s Raining Babies

by tinysneakers

Once you get married you know all about splitting holidays, if you didn’t already. It’s never easy figuring it out, but for us, Thanksgiving is often a no-brainer. The most traveled holiday of the year is not the time to be taking a 6-hour-turned-9-hour drive to Maryland, so for the past couple years we’ve just moved the holiday up a week. I get Thanksgiving at home with my family, the husband gets Thanksgiving {aka football} with his, and no one’s stuck in a car on the highway.

The morning of our Thanksgiving {last Saturday}, my step-sister and her husband hosted a fabulous steel cut oatmeal breakfast complete with an elaborate toppings bar, baked apples, and coffee. It was the perfect way to start the holiday- good company and a nice filling breakfast. My step-dad skipped out on the festivities to do his thing- start cooking his famous Thanksgiving dinner.

Or so I thought.

We quickly hurried home from breakfast to get on with the holiday happenings. When we pulled up to the house, my aunt’s car was parked out front. I was ecstatic to see her earlier in the day instead of waiting until dinner time. But as I walked in the front door, I heard a familiar voice coming from the kitchen. My other aunt. Who lives in Michigan.

As I made my way into the kitchen I was overwhelmed with excitement as I was greeted by both of my aunts. Then I looked around and realized there was no turkey preparation going on- and the table was filled with snacks and munchies. And cupcakes.

And then there were the plates and napkins. No turkeys or fall leaves here.

My mom threw a surprise baby shower! Just as I was taking it all in, people started flooding through the door. It was so wonderful to see all of my family and friends. Not only was this the only time I’d be home pregnant {well, when anyone else knew}, but it would also be the last time I’d make the trip home without a baby in tow.

As if being surrounded by everyone I love wasn’t enough, we were showered in baby gifts.

It all starts becoming very real and exciting when you suddenly have something to dress a baby in, diapers to put them in, and seats to bounce them in.

The thought behind the gifts was priceless- a blanket my mom knit so the baby and I can snuggle up together; the beautiful quilt my step-sister is making; the rocking chair my mom, aunts, and I all used when we were little; and a selection of favorite books.

I can’t wait to sit down and read them and tell our baby who they were from.

Talk about an appropriate day for Thanksgiving.
