Sometimes I think you’re meant to hear the conversations going on around you.
I’m sure you’d think I was making it up if I told you that a topic of dinner conversation at a friend’s wedding managed to approach the subject of OBs, gyns and C-sections. Specifically the topic of C-sections at my doctor’s practice. More specifically, the fact that my doctor was likely out there winning awards for his high C-section rate. Exactly what every pregnant woman wants to learn about their doctor. But that’s exactly what happened when I was 6 weeks pregnant. The timing couldn’t have been better.

Awkward wedding photo stolen from BFF's Instagram feed. That's what tired & pretending I'm not looks like at 6 weeks pregnant. And no, that's not a glass of wine.
Upon learning that bombshell of information, I immediately turned to the source- a college friend who’s coincidentally a labor and delivery nurse at the local women’s hospital. I immediately spilled the beans and practically begged her to tell me what to do and who to see.
Her first suggestion? A practice of midwives. Seriously? You mean exactly what I was hoping for but I hadn’t found in my area? At least not in the reputable, non-hippie, non-living room approach. Guess I’m not as good of a researcher as thought.
As soon as I was back home and able to sit up for 5 minutes I called and cancelled my marathon of appointments at the physician’s office and signed up with the new practice.
I couldn’t resist keeping the first appointment with the old doc merely a few days away though: the pregnancy-confirming ultrasound. Seeing is believing right?

Good for you! I had to have 2 c-sections, and you definitely don’t want one unless you really need one. I hope the new practice is exactly what you are looking for!
Yeah, if I need one that’s fine, but I don’t want to up my chances just because the doctor feels like it! The new place is much much better! 🙂
Good for you on taking that step! And lucky you found out, that’s kind of scary. Like, perhaps worthy of a letter to the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
That’s great that you got in with a midwife, I’ve heard nothing but good things from people who have had them (the practises here are so packed it’s hard to get in!)
Good luck at the ultrasound! You’re right, seeing is believing. And just wait until you hear the heartbeat!! Some special, let me tell ya.
Ahh I don’t blame you! I would have done the same thing. I hope you love your midwife practice 🙂
SO much better!
Hoooorayyyy! I ditched my OB at five months for a group of midwives and ended up having a wonderful home birth. Believe me, that is not where I started, but am so happy that’s where I ended up. The level of love, support, and dignity my baby, my partner, and I were given was beyond amazing. I’m excited to follow your journey!
