Baby SoS: 1 Week

by tinysneakers

My little mighty mouse,

Today I would have been 39 weeks pregnant with you… counting down the final week of pregnancy, wondering when you would make your grand arrival.

Instead, I’m sitting here in awe that you’re already more than two weeks old.

But first things first. Your first week!

baby 1 week

You weighed only 5 pounds 9 ounces when we brought you home from the hospital the Tuesday after you were born; that meant a visit to the pediatrician was in order the next day. You made us all cheer when you gained half an ounce. Talk about the little things exciting us.

You looked a little yellow, so off to the lab we went to check your bilirubin levels. We thought you were done getting poked and prodded when we left the hospital, but no such luck. It was pouring rain and you weren’t a fan. I walked into the lab with you wailing in my arms; my first public appearance with a screaming baby. Your dad followed the sound of your screams into the lab. As soon as he held you in his arms you were quiet and happy.

We wrapped your tiny little foot in a heating a pad to get the blood flowing. You were such a champ when the tech pricked your foot. Your eyes opened wide in protest, but you didn’t make a sound. Good thing you were so laid back about it; we ended up repeating the process 3 days in a row. You were a little jaundiced, but not so much that you needed treatment. Instead we worked around the clock to make sure you were eating and we baked you in the sunlight in your nursery. Your yellow tinge slowly started to fade.

Speaking of eating, you’re a champ at that too. The midwife warned us before you were born that babies born early have a really hard time eating. You must take after your mom- you heard that and were determined to prove her wrong. Sure, we have a little trouble here and there, but we’re so proud of how great you’re doing. A nurse came to visit us at home on Friday and you blew us away by gaining 4 ounces in 2 days. We breathed a little sigh of relief and stopped worrying so much about whether you were eating enough. You clearly were. Smile

We’ve been calling you our little mighty mouse- you may be small in size, but you are SO strong. You’ve impressed the doctors and the lab techs with your strength. You practically squirmed your way off the lab table, astonishing the tech you were only 5 days old. You’re already lifting your head and looking around. Oh and you love to pee on us. We’re clearly novice diaper-ers, but we’re getting the hang of it. Just wait until that belly button’s all healed!

Your first bath was a sponge bath in the sink. I can’t say you loved it, but you were a good sport. I wouldn’t like sitting in hard plastic getting cold either.

Your first week has been better than words can express. Thank goodness you didn’t wait any longer to join us!

He’s adorable. Our first was only 5 lbs 10 oz when she was born, and the second was only 6 lbs 3 oz. They both had tons of trouble gaining weight the first few years. Glad he’s gaining right!
