A Day in the Life of a 9 Week Old

by tinysneakers

9 week old baby

Just for the record, I like to keep my mom and dad on their toes. Nothing I do is predictable or routine or resembles any type of schedule. People keep asking me what I do all day to make my parents so worn out and busy, so I thought I’d give you an idea of a day in my life. Tomorrow may look entirely different.

6:30-7am Rise and shine! Wake up mom, wake up! I’m hungryyyyyy. And I need my diaper changed, it’s all wet and squishy. Hurry, feed me! Now! NOW!

7-7:30am Ok, that’s better. Now we can play. Scooch over and let me play in your bed. Mommy and daddy always act like they want to go back to sleep, but that’s sooo boring and overrated. Morning is my favorite part of the day!

8-8:30am Waaaahhh. I’m tired. I want to go to sleep but I don’t want to miss anything. There could be really cool things happening! Mom wraps me up in some silly straight jacket blanket thing so I can’t flail my arms around. Bahhahaa I can still kick my legs though. She tries so hard to make me take a nap in my crib or rock n play, but I rarely cave for that nonsense. I usually make her really work for it- bouncing me on some bright blue plastic ball while I suck on her finger. She tries to put these silly rubber things in my mouth but I just spit them out at her.

10am This is where things get shady. Sometimes we have this battle for two hours or more! I’m really stubborn and just hate sleeping even when I’m sooo tired. Every once in awhile I let mom win and I go to sleep for a little while. One time I slept for 2 hours, but I try to keep it between 30 minutes and an hour. When I’m feeling particularly feisty I like to play games with her: I pretend I’m asleep for about 5 minutes- just long enough for her to think she’s won and might have time do something. I here she likes to eat occasionally, but I don’t give her much time for that.

Sometimes I totally skip that morning nap. Then things get really interesting for mom and dad.

Regardless of how I decide to play the nap situation, I’m always ready to eat 2 hours after I got up. And then 2 hours after that. And then 2 more hours. You get it, right?

The rest of the day varies depending on how that morning nap went. For some reason mom keeps trying to make me go back to sleep every time I’m up for an hour- and that includes eating! No fair!

11am Some days around 11 we go do something fun, like some exercise class called yoga or some silly word like that. I like it because there are lots of babies there and no one cares if I scream or cry or want to eat again. I seem to cry more and louder than all the other babies. Don’t they know how much fun crying is?!

Other days we go to breastfeeding support to try to get mommy’s milk situation figured out. There’s other babies there too and they don’t cry much either. They do that boring sleep thing. Today we figured out I weigh 11 pounds! I’m a champ at this weight gaining business.

1pm Mom usually tries to make me nap again after this. Then we usually go for a walk around the neighborhood. I love being outside- the sound of the winds and the birds, the warm fresh air and sunshine…I’d stay outside all day if she’d let me! Sometimes we go in the stroller and other times mom wraps me up in a piece of fabric she calls a K’Tan. I usually stay awake if I’m in the stroller, but boy is fun to see where we’re going. I try to stay awake in the wrap, but it’s hard to work to hold my head up and look around so sometimes I just give in and go to sleep. I think that’s mom’s strategy, but I’m on to her.

2-6pm Pretty much we do the eat-diaper-play-try-to-sleep thing all day long every 2 hours. I wish I could play more but right now I pretty much just stare vacantly at things while mom and dad make toys make noise or make me try to grab things. So not cool mom and dad. That’s for babies.

7-9pm I usually go to bed around 8 or 9 these days. But first I get a bath. I love bath time! Dad sprays me with water and mom gets me all clean and splashes around with me. I hate when it’s over, it makes me so sad. I scream and let everyone know.

Then I get a bedtime snack from mom while dad reads me a book. Then it’s time to sleep. Sometimes I go to sleep while eating; other times it’s a fight. I don’t mind sleeping at night as much as during the day. It gets kind of boring when it’s dark and quiet.

9-10pm I have no idea what mommy and daddy do after I go to sleep. I think they go downstairs and drink a beer. Maybe they eat dinner sometimes too, I don’t know. This is the longest stretch I’ll sleep all day- about 4 hours. I think mommy goes to bed pretty soon after me because she knows I’m going to keep her up the rest of the night. What? I like hanging out with her. Dad pretends to race cars or play football on that bright screen in the living room while mommy sleeps.

1-6am After my 4 hour nap, I get up every 2 hours again. I’m up for about half an hour to an hour, then I’ll sleep a little again. I just keep on doing it til the sun comes up and we start all over again!

WOW, sounds exhausting! I am 10 weeks pregnant and trying to sleep allllll I can now, from the sound of this I am going to be in for a wild ride. He is precious though so I am sure it will all just pass. I guess whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger right? Keep up the great job!

Wow, 11lb!! What a champ! And omg, our babies definitely read the same manual. I was hoping things were going to get better at 6 weeks.

Good on you for getting out and about so much 🙂 It isn’t easy!

I see you are using cloth diapers! I would love to hear how those are working out for you.

I know this is an older post but this day sounds exactly exactly like my nine week old. Right now I’m sitting on the bed with my beast as I affectionately call him seeing how long this nap will be. It’s been exactly twenty minutes then he wakes, I repacify then sometimes I get another twenty the other day I got a rare hour. So my question is when did your little gut start napping better? I need to know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel cause right now its awfully dark

Do you sprinkle tummy time in sporaticly throughout the day? That’s the one thing I can’t seem to find good advice about for my 8 week old.

Everyone says “Do as much as you can when she’s alert, in s good mood and hasn’t just eaten”… But that’s NEVER!

My pediatrician said to make most of her walking time on her tummy, but she screams. What do you do?

We did it whenever we had “playtime” and if he didn’t go for it didn’t fret about it. Honestly he did the best if I laid him on top of me for it instead of on the floor by myself.
