Halloween for Semi Grown Ups

There’s no better indicator of age or stage of life than Halloween. The more clothes you’re wearing, the older you are. The more you acknowledge the freezing cold temperatures of October, the older you are.

Somewhere between scantily clad and doors-locked-lights-off-hiding-from-trick-or-treaters-in-bed-by-8 falls pregnant girl and her husband.

We’re Juno & Bleeker. Might as well use being pregnant to our advantage, right? {Any costume that lets me wear jeans, sneakers and a hoodie is right up my alley.}

We sort of pulled it off…?

Despite the near-frigid temperatures that so conveniently fell upon us suddenly on Saturday, we headed out to a Halloween/birthday party, complete with bobbing for apples and a costume contest.

The hosts and birthday boy, Ron Burgandy and Veronica Corningstone:

My winning costume votes? The bestest and her husband as Quailman and Patty Mayonnaise:

And another one of our friends as a hipster, which is only really funny if you know how not-hipster he really is.

Let’s not discuss the horrible quality of my pictures that may or may not have to do with a tragic camera accident earlier in the evening.

Did you/are you dressing up for Halloween? What’s the best costume you’ve ever had?

The One in Which the Wake Wins

Only a mere week of re-declaring wakeboarding my favorite form of exercise, it goes and retaliates against me.

Apparently 4th of July weekend is just a little bit popular at the lake. As in, probably the most popular weekend of the entire year. That translates to boats.everywhere.

Wakeboarding requires a little bit of spaces, and smooth waters. Neither of those existed this holiday weekend, but of course we wakeboarded anyways.

But not for long.

Three runs in and I found myself flat on my face, tearing the board off my feet, and getting pulled back into the boat yelling things about a broken ankle and hating wakes.

Of course I didn’t break my ankle, but I did sprain it. The culprit? Crappy bindings that didn’t fit. My foot slid out of the bindings and proceeded to get stuck upright in the ankle part of the boot; I was then crushed by a serious of other boats’ wakes which sent my board into a spiral with my feet attached in all the wrong places.

Add that to this:

And you have disaster.

Oy vey.

The 26th Year

There’s something about birthdays that makes you look back and think of all the things that have happened in the last year. Most people think of New Year’s Day as that time of reflection, but birthdays make so much more sense to me. It’s amazing what can happen in a year, and looking back at all you’ve done in the past 12 months gives you excitement and encouragement for the next 12.

So here’s a look back at my 26th year. {Ugh. 27 means I’m a legit grown-up, doesn’t it? There’s no escaping the responsibility of being an adult or sneaking by as a “kid” anymore…except at heart, of course.}

May of last year brought my 5th month of grad school:

Exactly a month after my last birthday, I made probably the biggest decision/change/risk/leap of the year: I quit my job and started my own business, a nutrition counseling & consulting company.

Celebrated 3 years of being married to my best friend.

Finished a 24 hour bike ride with my mom.

Went on a fantastic vacation with best friends.

The travels didn’t stop there; it was a year of wonderful trips and destinations: Chicago, Cville, San Francisco, Charleston, Virginia countryside, Asheville…

year of travels

I tried Bikram hot yoga for the first time, which resulted in the most sweat generated in a single hour in my entire life.

The one thing that seems to be missing? The slew of races I had penciled in on my calendar. I’ve spent almost the entire past year recovering from a knee injury. I’m still a little lost in limbo- just starting to get back into things, but not yet really training.

I did however, get to do pretty much the best race ever: The Rugged Maniac. There was mud. Obstacles. Mud. Fire pits. Water slides. Mud. It was awesome.

Phew.

So, here’s to another fabulous year, hopefully filled with injury-free races, exciting travels, business success, and fun with friends and family.

What was the best thing you did this year?
