It’s a common conception that to get ripped you have to pound protein shakes all day long.

Popular belief; however untrue.

I’ve been trying to convince the husband of this for years, yet he still throws back a protein shake before heading to the gym, or whenever he’s trying to feel strong. I think it’s a guy thing. Protein = Swoll.

While it’s true you need protein to build muscle, it’s not so much about how much you consume. It’s about when you consume it. Yes, you need adequate overall protein intake, but most people easily hit this target without trying. What’s really important is that you have protein after a workout.

Consuming protein after exercising aids in muscle growth and tissue repair. By assisting in rebuilding muscle, protein helps you recover faster. Faster recovery means better performance the next time around.

It’s not just about how you work out, it’s about how you fuel and you recover. Daily activity is important, but adequate recovery can make a world of difference.

While protein and post-workout recovery fuel is essential, remember those calories still count for your total daily budget. If your watching your calorie intake, you can always time your sweat sessions so that a meal comes afterwards. That way you can still refuel properly without adding additional calories. No matter what, shoot to refuel within 30-60 minutes post exercise.

bootcamp workout

Last week I got my butt in gear with Jennifer Cohen’s bootcamp workout. It was a great warm-up to the 8 week bootcamp I started Monday. Crossfit-ters would love it: planks, burpees, jumping rope and more. Oh the dreaded burpee.

I mixed the moves up with some of favorite baby-friendly exercises for a total body workout.

Anytime I do a workout, especially a strength workout, I make it a priority to eat protein as soon as I’m done. One of my favorite post workout snacks are these protein power balls. Protein shakes are a great option too: you can refuel and hydrate at the same time. Sometimes after a tough workout it’s easier to drink something than to take the extra effort to chew. Sounds silly, but I bet you know what I mean.

While Muscle Milk doesn’t actually contain milk, it does have whey protein in it. Whey is a great recovery protein because it’s easily digestible. However, since it is a protein from milk, I’m unable to drink it. {My son is allergic.} In order to test out Muscle Milk as a post-workout recovery option, I recruited my favorite test subject: the husband.

His assessment:

Vanilla Latte– Good, but he’d prefer it as a meal replacement, not an after-exercise supplement. The vanilla-y, cinnamon flavor wasn’t refreshing, but tasted good.

Chocolate– Delicious. A great post workout shake. Better than his typical protein powder because he didn’t have to mix it, it was just ready to go. {Good for me because that means I don’t have to scrap day-old protein off the side of the cup that never quite makes it into the dishwasher. Ugh.}

So there you have it.

Exercising While Sick: Yay or Nay

Over Christmas {and the 2 weeks following it} I got the big C. The four letter word I haven’t used in years. That’s right, a cold.

I was snotting and stuffy and an all around bundle of fun. The one thing I wasn’t doing? Coughing. That ‘s usually how I figure out whether its time for a break from the gym or not. But this time, since I was pregnant, I laid low and took time to just rest.

My unofficial guideline for exercising while sick or taking it easy? If its above the head go for it. If its below the head, take a rest. It’s no fun exercising when your lungs are congested anyways, but it could also keep you sick longer.

Even if it is just in your head, sometimes rest is just what you need- your body needs the energy to heal and rejuvenate. Missing a couple of days won’t derail your workout plan.

Here are a few tips to help you make the decision:

  • Fever? Opt for the couch, not the treadmill
  • Coughing/cheat congestion? Take a breather-let it clear up before pounding the pavement.
  • Body aches? Don’t add to the pain, add a rest day.
  • Sniffles? Your call, but its probably ok to continue on as you normally would
  • Can’t decide? Try taking your workout down a notch.

Tips for feeling better faster:

  • Your mom was right about chicken soup. Only it doesn’t have to be chicken and it doesn’t have to be soup- just be sure to take in plenty of fluids!
  • If your throat hurts try tea or a mug of hot water with lemon and honey.
  • To help ease congestion try a hot shower with a tab that releases menthol when wet. Deep breaths! {<–my favorite!}
  • Cough drops, zinc lozenges, and cold meds are always an option to help relieve symptoms as well, although meds aren’t usually my first option.

How do you decide whether a rest day is in order when you’re sick? What are your favorite ways to ease cold symptoms?

Making It Work: Part II

Last week we talked about ways to “make it work”- specifically how to keep up with healthy eating even in the midst of a chaotic and busy life. Now it’s time to talk about the other half of the equation: exercise.

Here are a couple different strategies to try:

First Things First

Exercise in the morning before you start your day. Some people aren’t morning exercisers, but if it’s already done, other things can’t get in the way.

Do Something Small

I try to start most mornings with a  walk around the neighborhood. It’s not far- maybe a mile- and doesn’t take much time. I know as soon as I sit down to check my email, it could be hours before I get up again. This way, if my workout gets pushed off, at least I’ve done something to get the blood flowing.

Squeeze It In

There’s no difference between 30 minutes of exercise and 10 minutes of exercise 3 times a day. 10 minutes before breakfast, 10 minutes at lunch time, and 10 minutes before dinner give you your fill. Grab a set of handweights and pump out a few sets, do some jumping jacks or push ups, or go for a walk. Just be sure to warm up adequately so you don’t get hurt.

Write It Down

If you check your calendar as many times a day as I do, you’re probably going to see if you have a some gym time planned. Seeing it and planning for it help you make it happen.

schedule workouts

Make a Plan

I do beset when I’m training for something because the consequences for skipping too many workouts are more tangible. You don’t have to be actually training for something to take this approach- set a goal, pick a date, and come up with a plan. I’ve used the same approach for strength training as I do for a race- if I didn’t lift 3 times a week, I knew I’d never increase my strength or up my weights.

Form a Routine

The more consistent you can be, the easier it is to stick with it. Many people operate on a routine- there’s a specific time they get up in the morning, come home from work, eat dinner, etc. Add exercise to that routine to help you keep it up even when things get busy.

Take a Class/Recruit a Buddy

Knowing spin class is every Wednesday at 7 can help you get there even when you’re tempted not to. It helps you plan around your workout time, and seeing other people in class can help motivate you to go. Having a workout buddy- someone you meet for a walk, you go to a class with, or you meet at the gym- helps keep you accountable too. You may ditch your own workout for a wimpy excuse, but you probably wouldn’t ditch your friend unless it was important.

sign up for gym class

Pay for a Class/Membership

Prepay for a month of yoga classes or boot camp, etc. If you’ve already paid upfront, the chances of you making it to that class are pretty good. Winking smile
