Thoughts
So this little blog thing here has done at lot for me over the past few years. It let me work through some stuff I otherwise would’ve complained a lot about to my family and friends {though don’t be mistaken, they got their fair earful}. It presented me with some really cool opportunities I wouldn’t have gotten to experience under other circumstances. And it got me {one of} the job{s} I have today, which allows me to spend a huge portion of my time with my rowdy two year old. {I can complain all I want about how hard that is, but I really wouldn’t want it any other way.}

This blog goes and gives me all this good mojo, and what do I in return? Turn my back on it. I’ve more than a little bit abandoned my original internet baby in favor of taking care of my actual baby {fair, right?} along with other people’s internet babies. And though I get paid to do things for the other people’s internets, it’s not fair that my own webchild doesn’t get a little love too.

The problem is this is a food and fitness blog. Only there isn’t a ton of fitness going on right now {I’m in PT for an old, stubborn knee injury and recovering from 3 fractured ribs} and the food part, although happening, isn’t what you’d call blog worthy. {Food blogging actually takes up an insanely ridiculous amount of time that you’d never imagine possible.}
I learned a long time ago that if you want your blog to be your business you have to treat it like one; you have to treat it like a brand.
Well right now I don’t want to have a brand. I don’t want to be cornered into a certain niche. I don’t need ONLY food and fitness things to fill this space. I don’t need ONLY baby, toddler, and mom things to fill that space. Well, I kind of do. But somewhere in between the two there has to be room for just me.
I don’t need rebranding, I just need room for a fresh perspective. So for awhile you might see things on here that you don’t really give two cents about. What I write may benefit you in no way at all. But it might benefit me and my blogbaby by just giving myself some {{{{{{{{{{ space }}}}}}}} to put stuff. Words, pictures, ideas, thoughts, moments, or nothing at all. Whatever.
So one day I might be able to tell you about the guy that’s been sticking needles in my leg for the past month, leaving me screaming in agony yet putting a smile on my face because for the first time in 4 years I can run almost 2 minutes pain-free, or I might decide to let you in on the secret that I might be the only person in the entire world to not think Breaking Bad is the bomb.com.
So yeah. End post of nothing.
But first links. There’s always reading to be done.

Thoughts
I feel a little bit like I’m emerging from a long hibernation.
I kicked off the holiday festivities with a doozy of a stomach bug that left me horizontal for 2 days and barely functioning for almost 7. Thank goodness for the extra hands on deck to help with the little one or I’d probably be in a coma by now.
As I slowly came back to life I realized all my websites had crashed {business & blogs}. Merry Christmas.
I know you were all at the edge of your seats waiting for it to come back up. {sarcasm}.
It took a week of pestering tech support over and over again to finally get things up and running again, minus my last few posts. Oy vey. Hopefully things are working now. Fingers crossed.
The break from the internet was rather welcome, although I also felt a little something missing. What is it about sharing random thoughts and happenings on the interwebs that’s so cathartic and satisfying? Gotta love the 21st century.
I’m not going to worry about playing catch up on the posts & things that got deleted or I skipped do to the plague, but here’s a couple end-of-year musings:
+ My blog used to be a little more personal, then it got not so personal, and now I’m thinking maybe going back to the old ways a little. It’s kind of boring just to write about food and food alone. I need to let go of the fact that every post doesn’t have to have a purpose that appeals to everybody.
+ I might sneak in a make-up Christmas post before the year ends, but we’ll see if I get around to downloading pictures by then.
+ Does anybody ever write a year-in-review post that is like “boy, 2012 really sucked”?
+ I am as sick of hearing about my knee not working as you are. I’m back in therapy for it. More about that some other time, but boy do I love my chiropractor.
+ Maybe one day I’ll be able to register for a race and actually run it. We were supposed to do the Lifetime Fitness Commitment 5K as a family on Tuesday, but they moved the start time up by 2 hours at the last minute I’m not sure we can get there in time. I refuse to wake the baby up any earlier than he already gets up on his own.
+ I’ve been playing with my new Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor and I’m in love.
+ We’ve almost survived our first year in parenting. Wow. A week and half to go. I’m so not ready for my baby to be a toddler.
+ I’ll end with just one cute Christmas picture, because how can I not?

Hope you all had happy holidays full of family, friends, and fun- minus the stomach flu!
LookBack
Considering in the past week I’ve deleted my memory card twice, lost Internet for 4 days {in the condo specifically chosen for it’s inter-webbing capabilities}, and have a camera that can’t take pictures because the lens is so foggy from the heat & humidity, it seems like the perfect time for this meme to reach me. And, like Theodora says, it’s hard to hide on the internet. So here goes:
A Collection of Links
Most Beautiful
All About My Stinky Feets
Not the most beautiful in terms of me writing it, but in terms of the response- the comments & emails when I finally fessed up about my feet and attached my face to my blog gave me the support I didn’t know I needed. Imagine the sound of my heart breaking when every one of those comments got deleted in a host switch.

Most Popular
Attack of the Hunger Diaries
Most of my popular posts tend to be recipes, like Vegan Cinnamon Rolls, Southern Fried Oatmeal, and Crockpot Steel Cut Oats.
But aside from recipes, my response to the Marie Claire blogging article continues to be at the top of the list. Especially surprising since I wasn’t even involved- I just had something to say.

Most Controversial
Frito Lay: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Gee, shocker. A post about a potato chip company on a blog about health and fitness was controversial. But good controversy. The comments really make you think about your food.

Post Race Recovery Tips
Everyone talks about training for a big race. Rarely does someone mention what goes into recovering from said race; I think it’s just as important as getting ready for it.

Why You Don’t Need a Fancy Camera
I love my dSLR with all my heart, but that doesn’t mean you have to have one to take a decent picture for your blog. The same things that help you take a good picture with a nice camera can help take pictures taken with your point and shoot camera to the next level.

Surprise Success
No Shame in Being Cheap
Ironically written before I owned said fancy camera, the underlying pressure in the blog world to have the next best thing is just ridiculous. Apparently I’m not the only one that feels that way.

Alternative title: “I Promise This Post Isn’t About Bikes” 😉
I purposely left out cross training activities like swimming & biking in the post about how to improve your running without running These things are, of course, fabulous ways to improve your running- but it’s what I always turn to. It’s time to think outside the box- what about classes like zumba, step, or kickboxing?
Before I hurt my feet, I was a step addict (call me an 80’s wannabe if you want ;)) & I taught kids’ kickboxing classes. [I doubt you’ll ever find me loving zumba]. I never considered that these classes were improving my running, but they were. They without question boosted my cardiovascular capacity, and since they used different movements than running, it gave my overworked leg muscles are break & worked on the ones running didn’t get to.
It’s been awhile since I’ve done any class but Pilates, but last night I accompanied my mom to an LA Boxing class to give it a try.
{To be honest, I tried to protest and say I couldn’t do it because I’m injured, but then I remembered how excited my mom’s been over the past few weeks about taking control of her lack of exercise, so I caved and went with her.}
Every time she talked about class, she said “kickboxing”, but oh no. This was boxing-boxing. Each person had their own giant punching bag, hand wraps, and boxing gloves.
(Picture from website)
The class started out much like a “bootcamp” class at the gym- jumping jacks, push-ups, burpees, you name it. [I got the ab workout of my life since I did sit ups every time there was a jumping exercise]
But then we started punching. It took me a minute to realize I actually had something to punch– not just the air in front of me like in kickboxing. And once I figured that out, my feelings for the class changed.

I had a blast punching the crap out of that bag. Seriously. [Husband- consider yourself warned!] I understand the need for wraps & gloves now…
Would I ever want to join this kind of gym? No. But I wouldn’t mind having my own personal punching bag- talk about a stress release!
Blog Goodies
On a side note, you may have noticed a change in my blog style. I’m still working on exactly what it is, but I’m trying to do my own thing, not just what everybody else does. If you have comments or suggestions about what you like & don’t like, please feel free to tell me. (I may or may not listen ;))
Anyways, if you’re a blogger, you know that sometimes the writing comes easily, and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes a post is a homerun, and sometimes it’s a bomb.
Last night I finally caved and downloaded Problogger’s ‘Scorecard for Bloggers’. I’m an affiliate for his 31 Days to Build a Better Blog- that one’s full of useful stuff so I figured having some extra tips would come in handy.
I was a little bit blown away- the authors are selling themselves short by calling it a “Scorecard”. It is a scorecard in that it gives you an actual checklist to go through to see how your blog or posts score, as far as content, SEO, grammar, etc. But it’s 59 pages of how to improve everything on the list.
So if you’re interested, check it out.

Ever tried boxing or another alternative workout? I really, really want to try air yoga (the one with the hanging fabric!!)
