There’s a bowl of hot banana walnut oatmeal and a mug of coffee with French vanilla coconut creamer waiting in the microwave. While I think it sounds delicious, the husband is less than thrilled.

Today begins the husband’s week of veganism. Shall we take bets on how long it’ll last?

Just so we’re on the same page, I have no intentions of making him stick to this after his 5 days are up. And I have ZERO expectations that he’ll want to continue.

So why did I encourage him to do it?

He’s obviously clueless. Before you can understand something, you have to be educated. Maybe this will help him realize why offering me chicken and cheese for dinner is less than helpful.

Learning about what you’re eating and where it comes from is important. How else can you make educated or informed choices? Just because something looks healthy doesn’t mean there’s not something sneaky hidden in there.

Tips for Going Vegan {or Vegetarian}

1. Start small. There’s no need to do 360 on day 1. Cut back on drinking milk, then move to using less cheese. Start with one meatless meal a day- or even a week. Making changes gradually may help you stick with it.

2. Start reading labels now. Don’t wait until you want to make a change- turn those packages over and start reading. Getting familiar with ingredients will help you out no matter what you decide to do with your diet.

3. Get educated. Do some reading or some Googling. Learn what foods fit into your new way eating. Learn what else you might need to include, like vitamin B12 for vegans.

4. Find substitutes ahead of time. Absolutely love cheese? Figure out what you’ll eat instead- soy cheese, nut cheese, no cheese? There are lots of options for everything.

5. Look at other kinds of diets. Maybe veganism isn’t for you. Maybe vegetarianism isn’t your style. Maybe conscious eating is. Maybe pescatarianism is. You decide.

In Defense of Food. I actually hated this book the first time I read it. But I continued to read every other Michael Pollan book out there and I love hearing what he has to say, even if I don’t agree with it all. Food Rules is probably my favorite.

Veganomicon. A fabulous vegan cookbook. Some of it gets a little vegan-crazy: lots of ingredients and strange substitutions, but some of it’s simple and straight forward.
