“Running will forever be one of my most favorite things, no matter how many injuries I struggle through.”
Er, that’s idiocy, plain through. As my smart, common-sense dad once said– If it hurts, stop it.
Brilliant words.
I never, ever run through an injury- I always stop and let it heal.
Just my way of saying I’m not going to let a difficulty sidetrack me from something I love. And, most of my injuries are not running-related
Ay I give up. Run, hurt, heal. Repeat. That seems to be the pattern among runners. It’s no point trying to talk common sense. I realize your other injuries are at work too, and undoubtedly, running doesn’t help the situation. Have fun with knee and joint implants when you’re older!
I appreciate your concern, but I make it a priority to take care of myself- I don’t run when it hurts, I don’t push it, I cross train to minimize impact and repetition on the same joints, and listen to my body. For a lot of people, running isn’t just physical- it’s a great outlet for mental health too, and to me, that’s as important as my joints. We each have to make our decisions about what’s important to US.
You can always tell when a nonrunner comments. haha. I had so much knee pain when I started running, and my entire family said the same thing. “Just stop. If it hurts, stop.” Those are nonrunners for you. They don’t push through when the going gets tough with working out, and me, the naive runner, was obviously doing something wrong if I was injuring myself. Years later, I’ve learned to avoid a lot of common running injuries which doesn’t mean I don’t ever get injured, but there is a way to avoid injuries through strength training, foam rolling, and stretching. I know most of your injuries are not from running though.
Don’t listen to those people who tell you stop when it gets tough. Push through it, and find a way to minimize your work related injuries. I know you know this, but running shouldn’t be injury related painful! That is not normal.
Just came across your blog and I love it! Definitely those comments above are par for the course from non-runners. I hear them All. The. Time. I’m an avid runner and usually run about 2 marathons/year (just finished the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach
) The claim that runners will have knee problems and will require implants when they get older is completely unfounded and unsupported by any empirical research. The benefits far outweigh the costs as you show!!! I write about the importance of my runner’s high on my blog too
Running is such a great stress reliever! I feel so much better after but its always important not to injure yourself!
