Are You Rugged?

by Heather

Yes, road bikes are all they’re cracked up to be. Unfortunately I had to return my loaned bike yesterday… but not before I had a chance to take it for a spin. Luckily the weather cooperated and it was the perfect day for bike riding.

The verdict? The road bike was significantly more uncomfortable than my hybrid; it was also significantly more fun to ride. Faster, smoother, more reactive- this is why people ride bikes for 100s of miles.

But for now it’s back to the hybrid. Time to focus on running!

When I found out I had a spot in an Olympic-distance tri this May, I wasn’t running at all. I knew jumping back into things too quickly, especially with the motivation of a race hanging in there, could spell disaster for my knee. I decided a 5K at the beginning of April would be my test-run.

If I survived that 5K, I could do the tri. If not, the tri was out.

Well the beginning of April popped up out of nowhere. One day it was dreary, rainy, and frosty; the next it was sunny and all kinds of April. The 5K is Saturday.

I won’t tell you that right now I can only run a mile…

Luckily there’ll be some distractions along the course; a chance to give my knee a quick break. And while my knee’s resting, the rest of my body will be doing the work:

rugged maniac obstacle course

rugged maniac greensboro course

You know, just your typical 5K on a motocross track: crawling through tunnels, climbing 7 ft walls, hopping barricades, forging through a jungle of giant swinging truck tires, crawling through the mud, scaling a cargo net, leaping across floating barrels. Yeah, you know.

rugged maniac adventure race 5k

I’m excited. I was really hoping to jump over a fire pit, but I guess a mudslide will do. Winking smile

run through fire pit

Have you ever done an adventure race or mud run? Any hints on making it through unscathed?

So cool! Their are two similar to this coming to Ohio this summer and I'd really like to do one! Have fun, can't wait for the recap -- have someone there to take lots of pictures!!

That looks so fun! My friend and I are trying to sign up for an adventure run in May! They look like SO much fun but I've never done one before!

i did a mud run in 2006 before i knew they were so popular! it was a blast, though i haven't done one since. my hybrid has a big 'granny' seat (wide & cushioned, i get made fun of for it). i know if/when i get a real bike (w/ a real seat) i will be in pain. *but* i feel like i'll be faster and not dying on the "hills" like i am on my hybrid. at least, i like to think my heavy bike is what is slowing me down so much...

The seats on road bikes are actually pretty comfortable- you'd be surprised!! They're not big and cushy but they're smaller so they don't hurt as much. Plus, there's always padded cushions you can add ;) I always blame my heavy bike for my speed instead of my legs haha.

I did a 5k obstacle course race 1 month ago and had the best time. I can't wait to hear how it goes for you! I was covered in so much mud by the end. I'm a rugged girl!

Looks like a fun race. I did 4 obstacle races last year including a Muddy Buddy race with a friend and a bike, two 5Ks similar to what you're describing and one 7-mile trail run with freaking cold river crossings and hill scrambling. I love the challenge and the change. I love the fact when I finish and tell people about what I did they look at me like I just fell off the planet! You'll have a blast! Go into have fun and forget about your time! :)

That's awesome that you're doing one of these! I'm too afraid to do one in fear of: injurying myself (more), getting my shoes dirty, finding some sharp object while army crawling, etc.

hope your knee continues to heal! that race actually sounds really awesome; i'd LOVE to do something like that. :)
