Blueberry Cobbler Oats & DYKT #8

by Heather

Thank you all for the advice on my running rut- I’m sure I’ll snap out of it soon. Probably by not thinking about it ;)

Breakfast

Pumpkin oats just weren’t jiving with what I wanted for breakfast this morning. (Oh no! The horror!!). I wanted oats, just something a little different. I didn’t really have too many other mix-ins, so I decided to pull out a packet of instant oatmeal. I tried the Quaker True Delights Blueberry oatmeal- and actually really liked it!

It was a tad on the sweet side, but that’s to be expected with instant oatmeal. Don’t get me wrong, I love sweets- just not in my oatmeal.

I stirred in some cottage cheese and topped the oatmeal with chopped walnuts. This would actually make a really good dessert…..

Now DYKT (Did You Know Tuesday!!)

DYKT #8

Did you know….

Muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat?

Of course you know that….if you think about it for a minute. Colloquial generalizations have made us think that muscle weighs more than fat. That’s what makes it ok when the scale goes up when you’ve been working out. Well, a pound of muscle equals a pound of fat. (Remember that pound of feathers & pound of bricks scenario you learned in elementary school? Still applies ;) .) The real reason the scale might go up when you’re “losing weight” is that muscle takes up less room than fat. It’s much denser than fat, and therefore takes up less space. (That’s why weight isn’t always the best judge!)

A pound of muscle also burns more calories than a pound of fat, but you probably knew that too ;) But do you know how much?!

Of course it varies from person to person, but on average, a pound of muscle burns about 50 calories a day, versus a pound of fat that only burns 2 calories a day. That’s a huge difference!! And most people don’t just have one pound of muscle. Go lift some weights!! ;)

Edited to add: Samantha Angela said this really well: “1lb of muscle = 1lb of fat but 1 cubic inch of muscle is heavier than 1 cubic inch of fat, hence the “muscle weighs more than fat” term.”

I had the True Delights blueberry too! If I am going instant, I like the hazelnut kind better :)

I’ve been wondering about the new True Delights oatmeals. I bought the creme brulee flavored rice cakes – holy yum!

I have to admit they’re pretty good– much better than the True Delights bars…I LOVE the hazelnut flavor. Oo those rice cakes sound good :)

1lb of muscle = 1lb of fat but
1 cubic inch of muscle is heavier than 1 cubic inch of fat, hence the “muscle weighs more than fat” term. I don’t think it’s necessarily incorrect.

Yup, it’s just the amount of space it takes up!

I guess that saying never bothered me b/c I always knew what they were talking about: for the same volume, muscle does weight more than fat. ;)

I love when people try to guess my weight. It cracks me up. They are usually about 10-20 lbs off just b/c of my muscle mass that I have. Thanks for pointing out the HUGE difference in calorie burning between muscle and fat!

I knew that a pound of fat equaled a pound of muscle, but I never thought of it in the way that muscle takes up less space than fat. So that’s why it’s more important to pay attention to how your clothes fit rather than the number on the scale! :)

That’s very interesting! I’ve always heard muscle weighs more than fat so that’s good to know that it’s just a myth!
Yum those oats DO sound like they would make a good dessert!

Good point- a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same!! I love that more muscle=more calories burned, because it means you get to eat more!! Muscle food is the perfect excuse to eat more chocolate :)

It always makes me laugh when people tell me well if you want to lose weight you need to lay off weights because if you built muscle then your weight will go up… uh.. hello really? I will refer them to this post from now on :)

Was your hubs sad on Saturday night? it was a rough game :(

I love that you put the information on muscle weighing more than fat and the edit from Samantha Angela…so true! It is a nice excuse to use when you see the scale go up some weeks, too bad it’s just not true. :)

What a great fact – I always believed the muscle weighs more than fat!

I do need to step up my strength training though – I don’t do it nearly enough.

Great fact for the day! My dad always stressed that to me when I was weight lifting and watching the scale go up – they weigh the SAME but take up different amounts, and kinds, of space. :)
